On Monday, 30th September 2024, Greece launched a new digital platform, id.gov.gr, designed to streamline the process for booking appointments for citizens needing a new ID card. This platform allows individuals to schedule appointments digitally for either the issuance of a new type of identity card or the replacement of the old blue one due to changes in personal details, expiration, damage, or old age.
The platform aims to eliminate the lengthy waits previously experienced by citizens trying to secure appointments for their identity documents. Starting from Tuesday, 1st October 2024, digital appointments can be scheduled, easing the process considerably by ensuring that there is adequate time between appointments at the same Identity Card Issuance Authority.
This service has been developed by the General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance under the Ministry of Digital Governance. Citizens access the platform using their Taxisnet credentials. A significant feature of the system is its capability to adjust appointment times and days based on the availability and scheduling constraints of the issuing authority.
To book an appointment, citizens select the appropriate issuing authority based on their permanent or temporary residence in Greece and choose a specific day and time from the available options. The system automatically retrieves personal data from the Citizen Registry and the National Communication Registry. If the information is outdated, users can either update their details on the spot or provide them manually.
Once an appointment is booked, the applicant receives a confirmation email with essential details, including the chosen authority's contact information. The appointment can be rescheduled, cancelled, or submitted anew up to one hour before the scheduled time. To assist users, reminder emails are sent out prior to the appointment.
In cases of lost or stolen ID cards, individuals must contact the relevant authority by phone to arrange their next available appointment, as these specific situations require direct communication with the police department in their area.
