A three-year-old boy, identified as Angel, is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Heraklion University Hospital in Crete after suffering severe abuse. The child’s mother, 26, and her 44-year-old partner have been charged with attempted murder. They have requested time to prepare their defence, with the court hearing scheduled for Wednesday, 29 January 2025.
The boy was admitted to the hospital in a coma, presenting with serious cranial injuries and multiple bruises and scratches. Doctors identified significant subdural haemorrhaging, necessitating immediate surgery. He remains in a critical state, with his condition closely monitored.
Reports revealed that the child endured horrific mistreatment over time, confirmed by both fresh and older injuries. Among the injuries were cigarette burns, particularly on sensitive areas of his body, and severe trauma to his head and limbs.

Graphic evidence of the abuse was discovered on the male suspect's mobile phone, showing the toddler being tortured. The imagery reportedly moved police officers to tears, illustrating the brutality of the acts.
The suspects have each placed blame on the other. The mother claimed that the child accidentally burned himself on cigarettes, while her partner videoed the abuse to allegedly protect himself from police accusations, attempting to portray the mother as the sole perpetrator.
This case has stirred intense public outrage across Greece. Residents of Heraklion voiced their anger outside the courthouse, demanding severe penalization. The situation escalated with derogatory graffiti painted on the suspect’s car by unknown locals, reflecting the community’s vehement response.
The legal proceedings have also seen a development with the defence attorney of the male suspect choosing to resign, citing personal ethical conflicts with the nature of the case.
