A dispute has erupted between the Athens Municipality and the Ministry of Culture regarding the maintenance responsibilities for the historic fountain located in Syntagma Square. The Athens Municipality released a statement declaring that they approached the Ministry's Department of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments as early as April with the intention of cleaning and maintaining the fountain. However, the municipal authorities claim that they were informed in May by the Ministry that the responsibility ultimately rested with the Ministry due to the fountain’s designation as a monument.
